A hair topper adds coverage and fullness exactly where you need it — on top — while blending into the hair you already have. It is a different product from a full hair system, and choosing well comes down to three things: base size, length, and color.
What a topper does
Toppers clip onto the top of your existing hair to add volume and coverage at the part and crown. Because they work with your own hair at the sides and back, the base only needs to cover the area you want to enhance — which is why getting the size right matters more than simply choosing the largest size available.
Choosing your base size
Measure the area you would like covered, front to back and side to side, with a soft tape over the top of your head. Then add a small margin beyond it: the clips need to grip hair that is strong enough to hold them comfortably, which usually means anchoring slightly outside the most delicate area. Common sizes range from small pieces for a widening part to larger bases for more overall coverage. If you are between sizes, the larger base usually distributes the clips more comfortably.
Part lines
The part is where a topper shows its quality. Quality toppers are made so the hair falls naturally from the part and lies the way growing hair does. Think about where you actually part your hair — left, right, or center — and choose a style you can wear the same way, or a free-part base if you like to change it up.
Length: match, then blend
Choose a length close to your own hair, or slightly longer. A topper that is a little long can be trimmed and layered by your stylist to blend with your haircut — and that final blending is what makes the piece settle into your own hair. Choosing much longer than your natural hair usually reads as a deliberate style change rather than an enhancement, unless that is exactly the look you want.
Color: match the ends, not the roots
Your own hair is typically darkest at the roots and lightest at the ends from sun and styling. A topper sits on top, so match its color to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair — that is what it will blend with. If your hair has highlights or dimension, a shade close to your overall tone will usually settle in once the topper is on and styled.
