The base is the part of a hair system that sits against your scalp and holds the hair. It is the single biggest choice you will make, because the base decides how the system feels, how long it lasts, and how it looks up close. Here is each type in plain English.
Lace
Lace bases are made from a fine, breathable mesh. Air moves through them, so they feel cool and light — a good match if you run warm, perspire a lot, or live somewhere hot. The front hairline on lace can look especially natural because there is no visible edge to catch the light. The trade-off: lace is delicate. It needs gentle handling and usually has the shortest lifespan of the four.
Skin
Skin bases are made from a thin layer of polyurethane, similar in feel to a clear, flexible film. They are smooth, easy to clean, and give a strong, even bond with tape, which makes them a solid everyday choice. Thin versions can look very realistic because the material nearly disappears against the scalp. They breathe less than lace, and the very thinnest versions are fragile, so many people treat those as a shorter-wear option.
Mono (Monofilament)
Mono uses a sturdier woven fabric that is tougher than lace. If your priority is durability — a system that handles daily wear, workouts, and regular removal without fraying — mono is the workhorse. It can look slightly less fine at the very front edge than lace, which is why many mono systems pair a mono top with a different material at the hairline.
Hybrid
Hybrid bases combine materials: for example, a lace front for a natural hairline, a mono or skin center for strength, and a poly perimeter that makes taping and cleaning straightforward. If you cannot decide which single material fits your life, a hybrid is often the practical middle ground.
Base size basics
Base size is simply how much area the system covers, measured across the top of your head where you need coverage. Most stock systems come in standard sizes, such as 8 by 10 inches, and can be trimmed down for a closer fit. Measure the area from front to back and side to side, then choose the standard size that covers it — you can always trim a little off, but you cannot add material back.
A simple way to decide
Hot climate or active lifestyle: start with lace or a hybrid with a lace front. Want easy cleaning and a strong daily bond: look at skin. Want the longest wear from one system: mono. Still unsure: hybrid. There is no wrong answer — just the best fit for your routine.
